Guide to video interviewing

As technology continues to evolve, video interviews are becoming increasingly common in the job search process. A video interview can be a great opportunity to showcase your skills and personality to potential employers, but it also comes with unique challenges. Here are some video interview tips to help you prepare for your next virtual interview:

1.     Test your technology

This is the area we see the most. Interviewers typically understand but the more you can prepare and troubleshoot prior to your call the better it appears. Before the interview, make sure your technology is working properly. Test your webcam, microphone, and internet connection to ensure there are no technical issues.

2.     Choose a quiet and well-lit location

We want to make sure we can talk with you without distractions and issue. Choose a quiet and well-lit location for the interview. Make sure there is no background noise or distractions and that the lighting is adequate.

3.     Dress professionally

This is becoming more of a divide. Some interviewers don't need professional dress especially in tech typically. However it is recommended in order to put your best foot forward. Dress professionally for the video interview. Even though you may be in your own home, it's important to dress as if you were meeting the interviewer in person. 

4.     Check your background

Check the background of your video call. Make sure there are no distracting or inappropriate items in the background. We often recommend interviewees to put the blur effect on the background versus adding a background that can sometimes be a distraction. 

5.     Look at the camera

Eye contact to connect with the interviewer is crucial. During the interview, make sure to look at the camera instead of the screen. This will give the interviewer the impression that you are making eye contact with them. 

6.     Practice with a friend or family member

Practice the video interview with a friend or family member. This will help you get comfortable with the technology and improve your delivery. If you can't practice with a friend, try practicing out loud and even in front of a mirror or on camera. The more you say it and see it the more confident you will feel.  

7.     Have a backup plan

We all know the challenges of having technical difficulties. Make sure you have the interviewer's phone number in case the video call fails and you need to switch to a phone call. This will show you are prepared for all scenarios. 

8.     Be mindful of body language

During your interview, think about how you body language is conveying a message with or without you knowing. Sit up straight and avoid slouching or fidgeting. This is another area that will show confidence. 

9.     Speak clearly and concisely

Ensure your microphone is working and you can be heard clearly. Apart from technical difficulties make sure to speak clearly and concisely during the interview. Avoid rambling or going off topic, and make sure to answer the interviewer's questions directly.

10.  Follow up after the interview
